Solutions For Cellular Connectivity: Distributed Antenna Systems

As society continues to depend on cellular connectivity as a whole, individuals + businesses understand the negative impact and frustration of weak cell signals, dropped calls, and inability to connect online. Just as smartphone technology has evolved, so have the solutions that keep the masses connected.

Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) were developed to meet the modern day cellular connectivity needs in remote areas, structures with signal-sapping building materials, and dense populations of users needing connectivity. The goal of this solution is to enhance cellular wireless signal with the installation of antennas and other components. DAS systems can be classified as active, passive, or hybrid. For commercial environments active and passive are the most common cellular options.

Active DAS

An active distributed antenna system is a robust, infrastructure-intensive cellular connectivity solutions for large areas. This option creates cellular signal to provide coverage, rather than bringing cellular from carriers into the space. The active system distributes the signal between a centralized signal source and remote DAS nodes installed throughout the facility. This solution is typically accommodated for larger areas where thousands of users access the network, such as airports and arenas.

Passive DAS

A passive distributed antenna system, also known as a cell phone signal booster system, eliminates connectivity problems by bringing in and enhancing existing signal from various carriers into a space. It does not require a new signal to be created and has less infrastructure requirements than an active DAS solution. Antennas are installed on the facility, typically the roof or window, to bring in the outdoor signal. Broadcast or inside antennas then transmit the amplified signal to phones and other cellular devices indoors. Many passive DAS systems are carrier-agnostic and support multiple carriers simultaneously. The size of the facility does not matter and the user capability and reliability remains high. This solution also requires less investment and the installation is not as labor intensive as an active system.

Whether it be hospitals, sports arenas, airports, historic buildings, or commercial real estate facilities, there are customizable distributed antenna systems to eliminate cellular connectivity issues and provide seamless, reliable communication for all users.
